Holzapfel besch\u00e4ftigt sich seit zehn Jahren vertieft mit nat\u00fcrlichem \nMaterial und Raum. In der Ausstellung zeigen wir neue Strohbilder und \neine Arbeit aus Reet. Eine Faser ist der kleinste Teil nat\u00fcrlicher \npflanzlicher Stoffe. In ihrer wiederholten Anordnung pr\u00e4gen die Fasern \ndie Organisation und Erscheinungsform der Materialbilder und Skulpturen.\n In Holzapfels Bildern spielen Licht, Farbe, tats\u00e4chliche und \nillusionistische Bildr\u00e4umlichkeit eine zentrale Rolle. Die Bilder suchen\n den Ri\u00df zwischen Abbild und Abgebildeten zu \u00fcberwinden und beschreiben \ndirekt, was sie sind.  Sie sind somit mimetisch und dennoch v\u00f6llig \ngegenstandslos und er\u00f6ffnen gleichsam R\u00e4ume, die vom konkreten Material \nausgehen. Beim Betrachten wechselt man st\u00e4ndig die Perspektive:  Sehen \nwir Material oder einen Bildraum? Das ist auch durchaus ein zentrales \nAnliegen des K\u00fcnstlers, der das \u2018dazwischen sein\u2019 schon in seinem \nBeitrag zur Documenta 14 \u201cZAUN\u201c ausformulierte.  Auch die Skulptur \n\u201eMantel\u201c, die einzelne Schilfrohrb\u00fcndel zu einer gebogenen Wand \nschichtet, f\u00fchrt den Gedanken der Arbeit  \u201eZAUN\u201c weiter. In der \ngleichzeitigen Betonung von Material, Sprache, Information und medialer \nReflektion spielt hierbei nicht nur das Sichtbare eine Rolle, sondern \nauch das Ersp\u00fcren der Gleichzeitigkeit verschiedenster medialer R\u00e4ume \u2013 \nExformationen und Informationen in einer von Daten getriebenen Welt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\n einem Text zu Karl Heinz Adler beschrieb der K\u00fcnstler den Barock als \nAufbruch in  die Moderne, der sich in Romantik und Klassizismus \nverzweigt und als moderne Form das Flie\u00dfende der verschiedenen Dinge \nzwischen Technik und Natur vereint. Da wir fortlaufend in diesen \nProzessen aus Teilen gefangen sind, wird das, was wir im Hier und Jetzt \nempfinden, auch immer weiter verzweigt. So zeigen und beschreiben die \nvon Holzapfel gew\u00e4hlten Materialien Stroh, Holz, Reet und Heu einerseits\n die Permanenz des sich Aufteilens und auseinander Hervorgehens als \nimmer wiederkehrenden nat\u00fcrlichen Prozess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Im Titel der Ausstelung \u2018Fasern\u2019 klingen dar\u00fcber hinaus Assoziationen zu Aus-gefranstem, Aufgetrennten, und zu etwas, das zerfasert und in seine Bestandteile auseinanderf\u00e4llt oder sich aus diesen zusammensetzt, an. Die nat\u00fcrlichen Materialien spiegeln historisch eine atomistische Perspektive, die seit Lukrez und den Naturforschern des 18. Jh. zur europ\u00e4ischen Aufkl\u00e4rung geh\u00f6rt. Aus dieser Perspektive kann die Romantik auch als eine Reflektion der fr\u00fchen Phase der Industrialisierung gelesen werden, die die Natur als ein durchdringendes Ereignis begriff und beispielsweise Wetterph\u00e4nomene oder Farbe wie bei Runge oder C.D. Friedrich direkt mit der Naturwissenschaft verband. In der sp\u00e4teren Weltwahrnehmung, die sp\u00e4testens seit den kybernetischen Modellen in der zweiten H\u00e4lfte des 20 Jh.  u.a. durch Heinz von Foerster entwickelt wurde, wird Natur dann zu Information und Modell. Ihre Sprache kommt aber direkt aus dem Material. Indem Holzapfels Arbeiten diese Sprache erklingen l\u00e4sst, sto\u00dfen seine materialbezogenen Arbeiten auch ein ver\u00e4ndertes Umweltbewu\u00dftsein an und er\u00f6ffnen ihre politische Dimension. Im Einklang mit der Land Art fordern sie \u2013 ohne agitatorisch zu sein \u2013 eine respektvolle Haltung  gegen\u00fcber der Umwelt ein. Ausgehend von dieser Haltung erscheint das Verh\u00e4ltnis der medial gepr\u00e4gten Stadtr\u00e4ume und der sie umgebenden Landschaften neu bestimmbar.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

For the last ten years, Holzapfel has been delving into natural materials and space. In the exhibition, we are showing new straw pictures and a work made of reeds. A fiber is the smallest component of natural plant-based materials. In their repeated arrangement, fibers shape the organization and appearance of the material pictures and sculptures. In Holzapfel\u2019s pictures, light, color, and real and illusionistic pictorial spatiality play a central role. The pictures seek to overcome the rupture between depiction and what is depicted; they describe directly what they are. They are thus mimetic and yet completely nonrepresentational; it is as if they open up spaces that start in the concrete material. Viewing them, one constantly changes perspective: are we seeing material, or a pictorial space? This is definitely one of the artist\u2019s central interests; he already formulated \u201cbeing in between\u201d in \u201cFENCE\u201d, his contribution to the documenta 14. The sculpture \u201cCoat\u201d, a single bundle of reeds layered to create a bent wall, also carries the idea of the work \u201cFENCE\u201d further. In the simultaneous emphasis on material, language, information, and media reflection, what is visible is not the only thing that plays a role; so does sensing the simultaneity of the widest variety of media spaces \u2013 exformation and information in a world driven by data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a text on Karl Heinz Adler, the artist described the Baroque Period as the beginning of Modernism, which divides between Romanticism and Classicism and, as a modern form, unites the flowing of various things between technology and nature. Since we are continuously caught in these processes made of pieces, what we feel in the here and now also continues branching. Thus, the materials Holzapfel chooses \u2013 straw, wood, reeds, and hay \u2013 show and describe the constancy of division and arising from and apart from each other as a recurring natural process. The title of the exhibition, \u201cFIBERS\u201d, also triggers associations of fraying, unraveling, and what frays to come apart in its components or what composes itself from them. The natural materials historically reflect an atomistic perspective that has been part of the European Enlightenment since Lucretius and the naturalists of the 18th century. From this perspective, the Romantic Era can also be read as a reflection of the early phase of industrialization, which understood nature as being a suffusing event. For example, the Romantic artists Runge and C.D. Friedrich connected weather phenomena and color directly with natural science. In the later perception of the world, as developed in part by Heinz von Foerster at the latest since the cybernetic models in the second half of the 20th century, nature then becomes information and model. Its language, however, comes directly from the material. Because Holzapfel\u2019s works let this language resound, his material-related works also spur a changed awareness of the environment and open up their political dimension. In harmony with Land Art, without being agitation, they call for a respectful stance toward the environment.
