It hints at the inevitability of establishing meaning to everything we see. But material and metaphor can never, especially in an art context, be entirely separated or be considered as autonomous entities. In this sense, the title not only ironically plays with the saying \u201csay what you mean\u201d or \u201cmean what you say\u201d but also responds to the famous quote by Frank Stella \u201cWhat you see is what you see\u201d which became the mantra of Minimal Art. After all, a reflection upon the title might lead to the conclusion that the common distinction between material and metaphor is purely a linguistic one. However, the question remains, do all of the material facts, which reveal themselves when we look at an artwork necessarily, require a mediation through language? Or, in other words, can we abstain from a translation from the field of being into the field of meaning when we experience a work of art? Do the \u2018limits of my language always mean the limits of my world\u2019?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The exhibition is comprised of works from eleven contemporary artists relating in different ways to these questions and sculpture as a medium. All the works demonstrate a high degree of sensitivity and understanding of the specific materials used. Traditional materials and sculptural techniques can be found next to works probing unusual visual or sublime effects, which touch upon the limits of materiality. In very different ways many of the works reach into the world of objects, either through formal allusions or by the inclusion of found or made objects. This selection of works explores the wide range of possibilities, which put the relationship between material and metaphor into an irresolvable and tense constellation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Das Wortspiel im Titel der Ausstellung mischt das Verh\u00e4ltnis von Fakt und Bedeutung auf, indem es es scheinbar auf den Kopf stellt. \u201eMeine was du siehst\u201c oder \u201eGebe Bedeutung, dem was du siehst\u201c bindet das Sichtbare unmittelbar an das Denkbare. Der Titel weist so auf die Unvermeidlichkeit, allem was man sieht, zugleich eine Bedeutung zu geben. Material und Metapher k\u00f6nnen \u2013 zumal in der Kunst \u2013 nicht klar voneinander getrennt oder gar als autonome Einheiten betrachtet werden. Der Titel ist so nicht nur eine ironische Auseinandersetzung mit dem Wahrheitsanspruch des Faktischen (\u201eSay what you mean\u201c, \u201eMean what you say\u201c), sondern auch eine Replik auf den ber\u00fchmten Ausspruch des K\u00fcnstlers Frank Stella \u201eWhat you see is what you see\u201c, der zu einer Leitvorstellung der Minimal Art wurde. Schlie\u00dflich, so kann man beim Nachdenken \u00fcber den Titel erkennen, ist die so gel\u00e4ufige Unterscheidung zwischen Material und Metapher ein sprachliches Problem. In einem Kunstwerk dagegen ist die Trennung solcher Kategorien aufgehoben. Dennoch bleibt die Frage offen, ob die materiellen Tatsachen, die sich uns in der Betrachtung eines Kunstwerks zeigen, notwendig einer sprachlichen Vermittlung bed\u00fcrfen. Anders gewendet lie\u00dfe sich fragen, ob in der Erfahrung eines Kunstwerks das Feld des Seins ohne eine \u00dcbersetzung in das Feld des Bedeutens auskommen kann. Bedeuten die Grenzen meiner Sprache wirklich immer die Grenzen meiner Welt?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Die Ausstellung vereinigt Arbeiten von elf zeitgen\u00f6ssischen K\u00fcnstlern, wobei die Skulptur im Zentrum steht. Allen ist eine hohe Sensibilit\u00e4t und ein Verst\u00e4ndnis f\u00fcr spezifische Materialien eigen, wobei die Spannweite von nat\u00fcrlichen Materialien und traditionellen Verfahren \u00fcber visuelle Oberfl\u00e4chenreize bis zu sublimen Effekten am Rande des Materiellen reicht.
