Cities are growing worldwide. This development impacts society, landscapes, and the economy and is accompanied by high resource and energy consumption. At the same time, cities must confront and adapt to the challenges of climate change. How can urbanization be made environmentally sustainable and socially equitable? How can cultural knowledge and practices from the past be applied and further developed to create new solutions for designing cities that are post-fossil and climate-resilient?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conceptional artist Olaf Holzapfel<\/strong> was invited by the Umweltbundesamt (UBA), Dessau, to design the multidimensional exhibitionproject \u201eWAND\u201c<\/strong> which will be on display in Dessau from June 28 until the end of December 2024. It proposes an interdisciplinary investigation of the wall as a fundamental component of architectural spaces, as a transitional zone between interior and exterior areas, and as a surface for design. The project explores the thesis that\u2014just as concrete and modular construction in modernism led to new aesthetic forms\u2014organic, renewable building materials (such as wood, clay, straw, and reed) could now lead to a new aesthetic in 21st-century architecture. The project combines contemporary art with regional aesthetics and craftsmanship techniques, experimenting with methods of knowledge transfer. A diverse accompanying program will reflect on the creation process and present the exhibition\u2019s content for discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Es sprechen: Dr. Lilian Busse (Vizepr\u00e4sidentin Umweltbundesamt), Olaf Holzapfel, Fotini Mavromati (Kunstbeauftragte Umweltbundesamt), Bernard Vienat (Kurator\/Kunsthistoriker), Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Vesta Nele Zareh (Hochschule Anhalt Dessau)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die Installation, welche im Zentrum der Ausstellung steht, wird in Zusammenarbeit mit Handwerkern, Expert*innen und Studierenden des internationalen Masterstudiengangs an der Hochschule Anhalt Architektur (DIA) realisiert. Doch es soll nicht nur gebaut, sondern auch traditionelle Handwerkstechniken erprobt, das Wissen \u00fcber organische Baumaterialien gemeinsam geteilt sowie praktische Kenntnisse und Fertigkeiten vermittelt werden. An drei Tagen w\u00e4hrend des Aufbaus der Installation werden Workshops<\/strong> angeboten, die in Handwerktechniken einf\u00fchren und das Verwenden organischer Baumaterialien als Alternative zu Beton zum Thema haben. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
